"We live in strange times: six months into a conservative‐coalition government in the United Kingdom, school children protesting against cuts to the Educational Maintenance Allowance (an extended form of child benefit for A Level students) were detained in a so‐called 'kettling' operation by riot police in the streets outside the Westminster parliament. They were beaten with truncheons when they tried to escape prior to demonstrators later being dispersed by mounted police. When this sort of thing happens on the streets of London, a stone's throw from the National Gallery and the Institute for Contemporary Arts, the world has become unhinged."
